The firm was founded by Robert S. Kahn to provide legal services at a reasonable cost. While there is certainly no shortage of lawyers in California, there is a shortage of attorneys providing services for reasonable fees. RKL focuses on unbundling legal services (breaking them down into component parts) and charging flat fees rather than outrageous hourly charges on legal work that is more certain and predictable.
By breaking down the legal services into distinct “parts,” not only may the consumer purchase only what is necessary, but legal advice becomes affordable, approachable, and tailored to an individual’s needs. Additionally, the cost becomes predictable. RKL understands it is important to be able to budget by seeing the cost of something before you buy.
For example, if a small business owner needs to discuss a business proposition with a larger company, and the proposition requires the need of a non-disclosure agreement to protect both parties, rather than pay an attorney an hourly fee, for a low flat-fee RKL will draft a non-disclosure agreement that can be used in almost any instance so that the small business owner does not have to keep returning for “new” agreements.
